The Reesk (rats) are, by the modern era of the Animus universe, are a sunken and depraved set of beings existing only at the fringes of the known world—exiled, lost and barbaric.
The irony is that they were not always that way. At one time, the Reesk ruled a vast Empire spanning much of the main central continent of Bown. At one time their culture and technology surpassed all others on the world, leaving the rabbit-like races at the fringes of society. Without further ado, here is a brief intro to the world of the Reesk.
Although the Reesk have come to be synonymous with matters-of-no-import, at best nuisances at the edge of common experience, they have had a profound and lasting influence on the culture that has shaped the Bownan world forever.
relationship to other races
In a subtle, but noteworthy twist, the Reesk once existed with the Här and the Bownans at the fringes of their society, interacting only as trading partners, and sources of unskilled workers and slave labor. One notable exception, however, exists in that the Mahirans—or Sea-Här—who exist on equal footing with the Reesk. The smaller Lop race, tiny cousins of the Bownans, known for their intelligence and cunning, serve as courtiers to the Reesk. This is due, in no small part (no pun intended), to the similarly diminutive stature of both Reesk and Lop together, affording them the opportunity to share the same architecture.
split empire: east vs west
Modern Här-Bownan scholars debate the true cause of the fission of the Reesk empire into its East and West factions. Some say that the events of the Phantom Winter were enough to severe economic ties that bound the two halves of the Reesk world into separate sections. Others put the split at a much earlier date, suggesting that family politics caused the division between the Lunar and Solar houses.
legacy of the reesk
Remnants of Reesk civilization can still be seen dotting the Här-Bownan countryside on the main, central continent of Argoff. The influence of the Reesk is still felt, as their two languages, Mokalese and Akaisic continue to affect Bownanese and Härtalk in syntax and loan-words.
The Reesk continue to influence the peoples of Bown to this very day, in their language and culture. The irony of their two great empires now being reduced to ragtag barbarians at the edge of society is not lost on modern historians.
