It's high time I said "hi!" and gave a proper introduction to myself—the author of these blogs, the Launch Your Universe brand and site, and the creator of the Animus transmedia storyworld.
Who am I? Where do I come from? What do I do? I share a look at who Joe Kawano: Animus Creator is in the paragraphs below.
Since I've started sharing content, I realize I may not have said much about myself. I think it's appropriate to fix that now.
who is joe?
I'm a creator. Though I love to work with people, my first passion has always been the quiet solitude of making things. Things, however, were not enough—whether they be pictures, roleplaying tiles, boardgames, or animated sequences.
I'm a person who grew up on, and thrives in the context of, story. So whatever I create, I like to tell stories about, and imagine more deeply. If that means thinking of things as part of a persistent world, or if that means uniting visual images to tell a coherent story, that's me.
where does joe come from?
I grew up in Toronto, Canada and went to school for west Michigan. As a child, I heard hundreds, if not thousands, of classic stories read to me—sparking an interest in narrative from a young age. In school, I applied that spark of interest to a course of study in film, with a minor in writing.
Animus, as a set of characters and a world, finds its roots in his early childhood as I grew up with long periods of sickness at home. During these periods, my imagination had time to filter stories and incubate. All the while, I had my faithful—if somewhat imaginary—stuffed animal friends, who soon became the characters that would flesh out the Animus world.
what does joe do?
Myself, I am the father of three handsome sons, who all contribute to Animus in their own unique way. Each of them has a character (or two) in the storyline of Animus which that son guides—helping to shape the history of the world.
As a freelance multimedia artist, I create videos, book covers, illustration, logos and other graphic design work, as well as working on marketing for myself and others.
